EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative 2010 Online Spring Focus Session

March 3–4 • Mobile Learning 2.0: The Next Phase of Innovation in Mobility
computer usersAlthough mobile learning has different meanings for different communities, we know that learning is deepened and enriched when students have options for their learning for multiple paths through course content. Mobile technology not only enables students to take their learning with them beyond the physical walls of the classroom, but it also makes possible a new array of interactions in the classroom as well. Mobile learning encompasses participating in learning activities anywhere, at any time, and utilizing mobile technologies that are rapidly evolving. Possible applications of mobile technology include enabling authentic learning engagements (such as real-time data collection), spontaneous mash ups (such as populating a map with local data), synchronous interactions with classmates and subject experts, and a rich variety of interactions with course content. Precisely because of its fluidity and independence from physical boundaries, mobile learning offers vast potential to enhance all types of instruction: face-to-face, blended, and online. The goal of this focus session is to re-assess the potential of mobile technologies and identify new ways in which mobility can contribute to the learning experience.
Join us March 3-4 for "Mobile Learning 2.0: The Next Phase of Innovation in Mobility," the 2010 ELI Online Spring Focus Session. Hosted inside an Adobe Connect learning environment, this virtual event will be much more than just a "usual" online seminar. You’ll exchange ideas and collaborate interactively with the ELI community—all without leaving your campus. You'll also receive all the resources and guided activities you need to help frame discussion and organize team events locally in your department, college, or institution.

We will work together to:
  • Develop an understanding of mobile learning and its diverse application to all learning environments: face-to-face, blended, and online
  • Explore various tools, devices, and instructional methodologies that support mobile learning
  • Create a framework for the design of meaningful and purposeful mobile learning activities
  • Reflect on the potential for mobile learning to promote critical thinking, student engagement, and success
  • Consider assessment strategies for mobile learning activities

Dali mLearning Zotero Group!

Dali mLearning Zotero Group! Online at:
http://www.zotero.org/groups/dalimlearning

I highly recommend Zotero as a reference manager and research tool.  It's free, web-based, and works as a Firefox plug-in.  Store copies of files, research articles, citations, etc. both locally on your desktop, or remotely, to access from anywhere.  Reference and research managers are a MUST for any graduate student! This will make your life and your research and citations MUCH easier! Learn more about Zotero at: http://www.zotero.org/

COE Computer Hardware & Software Requirements:

Computer Requirements: Hardware and Software

You will need all of the following items to access and interact with content in your online course.  This information is also available online @ http://online.education.ufl.edu/mod/resource/view.php?id=28017

Hardware/Internet Requirements:

  1. All students must have dedicated access to a computer using Windows XP/Vista or Mac OS X. Students should make sure to have access to a back-up computer (work, friend or relative's computer) in case of equipment failure.
  2. A high-speed Internet connection is highly recommended for all courses. We cannot guarantee multimedia components will work on slower connections. Some wireless connections might also present a problem. Unfortunately, we cannot distribute hard copies (e.g., cd-rom, dvd-rom) of multimedia items due to copyright constraints.
  3. Many courses use audio-video presentations. Students will need speakers or headphones to listen to presentations.
  4. Some courses use voice chat and/or student-narrated presentations. Students in these courses will need to acquire a microphone. Consult your instructor for more on this topic.

Software Requirements:

This software is available at no cost (the one exception is the MS Office suite, however there is a free alternative). It is recommended that you download the software even if you already have it on your computer. Many technical problems you might encounter can be resolved by installing the latest version of the following software. Click on the logo(s) to download.
  1. Firefox Firefox Web Browser - In order to simplify compatibility issues, we ask all students to access their courses using Firefox (not Internet Explorer or Safari)
  2. Quicktime Quicktime Video Player - Many courses include video presentations which are only accessible using Quicktime.
  3. Flash Player Macromedia Flash Player - Many courses include A/V presentations which require the Flash Player.
  4. Adobe Reader Adobe Reader - Many courses include .pdf documents which require Adobe Reader.
  5. Java Java Runtime Environment - Many courses incorporate content which requires JRE.
